Celebration
Coming Spring 2017 Our Annual Green Night
Green night is an evening event in which we invite our community into our school. We will showcase our 2017 Green, Healthy, Smart, Challenge grant project that will be completed in April 2017 during National Volunteer Week. We will be painting a mural similar to the picture below on our black top as well as creating a nature walk connecting our three outdoor learning centers. Also attending our Green Night will be Bridget Parlato of Baltimore Trash talk as well as Amy Wolpert from University of Maryland Extension to do a vegetable tasting with our students.

Community
Each October, Federal Hill Prep families gather at mile 9 of the Baltimore Marathon, to cheer on the runners. Located outside of a very picturesque American Visionary Art Museum, the students are an annual tradition for the runners to soak in the cheers and enthusiasm. The families clear the area of all litter during the event, and leave this corner as one of the prettiest in Baltimore City. |
Annual Spring Science and Green NightFHPS students and their families join staff and parent volunteers each spring for Green and Science Night. From dissecting jello "brains", conducting food experiments, constructing the best flying airplane, to teaching their parents how to compost, students have a mad night of science!

Quarters for Conservation April 2016
In preparation for Authors for Earth Day, students dug deep into their pockets and collected quarters for "Quarters for Conservation". Ms. Morone had students come by each morning to collect quarters. The students will vote on which non-profit conservation organization they would like to donate their collection of quarters to on Tuesday April 19th when Elissa Weissman will come for Author's for Earth Day. Each class researched these non-profit conservation organizations by visiting their websites to make an informed vote. 1. Blue Water baltimore- www.bluewaterbaltimore.org, 2. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation www.cbf.org, 3. Jane Goodall Institute www.janegoodall.org, 4. Conservation International www.consrvation.org, and 5. Hug it Forward www.hugitforward.org.

Summertime Supply Recycling
The FHPS STEM teacher utilizes recycled materials throughout the school year for projects and experiments. The entire school population contributes to this effort by donating key materials. The needs are included in the distributed school supply list, including such household items as egg cartons, paper tubes, and foam packaging. Parents collect items all year long for the students to use.

"Acting" Green
FHPS classes are focused on being green to accomplish lesson ideas. The Spring 2016 third grade class put on a production of Shakespeare's "The Tempest". Besides tackling this challenging script and studying Shakespeare in depth, the third graders produced their production with recycled papers and other repurposed materials to create their stage back-drop and on stage props.
All Watering Hands On Deck!
The new bird sanctuary and rain garden areas are the pride and joy of the FHPS Green Club. It takes a village though to help these thrive, especially in the summertime as students are not in class and on campus daily. Each June, the Green Club reaches out to the school community (via an online request), to garner volunteers for weekly watering duties of these beloved areas.
Spring 2016: An FHPS Green Grocery Store
As part of the Spring 2016 Celebration of Learning, the pre-k class created their own local Whole Foods- designing everything from nutritious foods to stock in their "store", determining prices, creating a flyer of weekly sales, and creating a top-notch customer service experience for visiting "customers"(their moms and dads!).
National Bike and Walk to School Day (Annually in May)
This event encourages students to bike or walk while teaching them about the health and environmental benefits of biking and walking. It also helps raise community awareness about the importance of bicycle and pedestrian safety education, safe routes to school, well-maintained walkways, and traffic calming in neighborhoods around schools.

The FHPS Clipperbots completed in the green themed challenge in Winter 2016. Their robot had to solve for five green challenges. They competed against schools throughout Maryland in a regional competition. The green environment at FHPS added to the Clipperbots passion for this robotics challenge.
Limiting Paper Communications
FHPS is a proud user of Classroom Parent, an electronic Database messaging platform to share important school updates, and students help make announcements to their peers via the school intercom (pictured). https://fhp.classroomparent.com
